The 6thSDSSE will take place June 14- 16,2022 at the Seminarhotel Rügel in Seengen.Besides the three exciting keynotes,12 PhD students and postdocs will present and discuss their projects. Position Paper on Science and Mathematicteaching
Science knowledge is evolving rapidly andit plays a prominent role in the response to the challenges that we are facing,
including climate change, pandemics and energy production. Science andmathematics school teaching must keep the pace,
and high-quality in-service teacher education and professional development forteachers in an indispensable element to achieve this goal.
For this reason, a position paper published by the GermanPhysical Society and four other major mathematics and science societies
calls on politicians and school authorities to create qualified courses forteachers of science and mathematics and to make it easier for them toparticipate in them during regular working hours.
This political demand and the points inthe position paper are highly relevant also for the education of Swiss physicsteachers.

UNESCO celebrates every year on May 16the International Day of Light (IDL) commemorating the date of the first laser operated byTheodore Maiman at Bell Labs in 1960. IDL is a global initiative that providesan annual focal point for the continued appreciation of light and the role itplays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, aswell as in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy.
2022 is the International Year of BasicSciences for Sustainable Development
On December 2, The United Nations GeneralAssembly promulgated the year 2022 as the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD). IYBSSD will put the spotlight on the links between thebasic sciences and the Sustainable Development Goals. It will be a key momentof mobilization to convince economic and political leaders, as well as thegeneral public, of their importance. Indeed, basic sciences provide theessential means to meet crucial challenges such as universal access to food,energy, health coverage and communication technologies.
